>15Th Annual Fann Cup Raises Over $11,000 For Charity

Amateur lacrosse players and fans from around the National Lacrosse League converged on Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, Ontario for the 15th annual Fann Cup this past month on July 6. On the floor, the Buffalo Brigade defeated the host Toronto Roadies 5-4 to capture the club’s first championship since 2004. But off the floor, and the reason for the tournament, the charities were the real winners.

This year’s charities were the Smilezone Foundation whose mission is to create, build and transform areas in hospitals, private treatment and development centres, and children’s clinics in order to improve the lives of children facing illness, disabilities, and physical and emotional obstacles. The second charity was the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association. In total, this year’s Fann Cup raised over $11,500 for charity, with Smilezone receiving over $7,700 from this year’s tournament, and Oakville Minor Lacrosse receiving $3,800. In total, Fann Cup throughout its 15 years in existence has raised almost $90,000 for various charities, proving why NLL fans are considered to be the best fans in all of professional sports.

Looking ahead, the 16th annual Fann Cup will be in 2017 hosted by the Buffalo Brigade. This will mark the return of Fann Cup tournament to the Queen City for the first time since 2007.
