Rock Name Matt Sawyer As Assistant Gm

Toronto Rock Owner, President & GM Jamie Dawick has announced he will retain the role of the team’s General Manager and has named Rock Assistant Coach Matt Sawyer as Assistant GM.

Following the conclusion of the 2015 NLL season, Dawick publicly stated that he was looking to fill the GM role.  Since then, the plan has changed.

“The original plan was to find a new GM,” explained Dawick.  “I had some conversations with some people but I just felt the best thing to do right now was retain the position and hire Matt as the assistant GM in order to continue down the path we are on.”

Sawyer has served as an assistant coach for several seasons with the Rock over a couple of ownership regimes.  The 40-year old Orangeville, Ontario native also spent the 2011 season as the Head Coach of the Boston Blazers, guiding them to the NLL playoffs.

“He’s a guy that’s been around the Rock for a long time,” said Dawick.  “Matt worked very closely with Terry (Sanderson) and he’s a good fit to work alongside me.  We’re on the same page.”

Sawyer’s resumé is deep at the Junior A lacrosse level and it is littered with championship rings.  He guided the Orangeville Northmen to the Minto Cup Canadian Junior A Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2012 as the head coach.  Those accomplishments make him one of the most accomplished Junior A head coaches of the last 10 years.

“It’s an exciting time,” said Sawyer of the upcoming challenge.  “It’s an opportunity to continue what the Toronto Rock have been doing.  Jamie is putting me in a good position and I’m excited for the opportunity and the new responsibilities.  Jamie and I have the same goals in mind and that’s making the best decisions for the future of the Toronto Rock.”

With the NLL’s free agency period now open as of August 1st, Sawyer’s first item of business will be to recruit and sign free agents that will attend the Rock’s training camp, which will begin in December.
